Corporation for National and Community Service - AmeriCorps

Funds to Nebraska: $472,174*

Additional federal funding is provided via AmeriCorps to mobilize and strengthen communities through volunteering, collaboration, and national service programs. AmeriCorps members funded through ARRA will engage in a range of activities in service to individuals and communities affected particularly by the weakened economy. The service of the AmeriCorps members will also bolster the capacity of community organizations that are faced with an increased need for their services.

ARRA funding will be awarded as grants to current national, regional, and local AmeriCorps grantees with a proven track record and demonstrate the capacity to efficiently and effectively draw upon this new resource to assist communities in need.


Primary Recipients

Formula Grants: Non-profit community organizations, public agencies, and faith-based organizations - $151,360

Competitive Grant: City of Lincoln - $261,985

Direct Funding: Omaha Tribe - $58,829

Timeline: Funding expires September 30, 2010, but extensions may be allowed.

Recipient's matching funds requirement:
Formula grant match rates range from 24%-50%, but waivers may be available in some cases.

The City of Lincoln must match its competitive grant with $123,070 in funds or in-kind services.

Recipient's administrative allowance: Pending guidance.

A competitive grant will be awarded to the City of Lincoln to hire 16 full-time and 8 part-time AmeriCorps members who will work with the Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department to provide a variety of programs focusing on energy and the environment. Projects may include educating the public, improving the city's tree canopy, rehabilitation and clean up in Lincoln's core neighborhoods, community gardening, youth programming, and recycling.

A direct grant to the Omaha Tribe will support the efforts of the Bright Futures Team.
